Military epic Eight hundred blew up Chinese cinemas
Military epic film Eight hundred continues to break box office records in China since the premiere on August 21, having already earned $260 million, Xinhua News Agency reported on August 30. The film's fees amounted to a total of 1.8 billion yuan (about $262 million), according to ticket sales platform Maoyan. This is the first film that crossed the line of a billion yuan in China this year. The director of Eight Hundred was Guan Hu. The film describes the history of Chinese warriors who protect the warehouse from Japanese interventionists during the Battle of Shanghai in 1937. The film was originally shot for the IMAX format and became the first major Chinese movie hit to blow up the country's cinemas since the outbreak of a new coronavirus. The country's cinemas began to open on July 20 after months of downtime due to the pandemic.
