Swedish Ministry of Foreign Affairs evacuated citizens of its country, Norway and EU countries from Africa
With additional flights from Morocco and the Gambia, the Swedish Ministry of Foreign Affairs assisted approximately 300 Swedish citizens to return home to Sweden. As a result of the coronavirus COVID-19 epidemic, Morocco closed its airspace to international flights just over a month ago, leaving thousands of EU and US tourists locked in the country. This was reported by the Swedish news agency Sveriges Radio on April 18. According to Sveriges Radio journalists, about 100 Swedish citizens received assistance from the Swedish authorities. Some 200 Norwegian and EU citizens were also included on the flight, which left Morocco on 17 April. On another flight from the Gambia, more than 200 Swedes received assistance. However, according to the Swedish Ministry of Foreign Affairs, there are currently about 4,600 Swedes in the world who want to return home but cannot do so for one circumstance or another. The situation in many countries is now uncertain, so these visits, which are organized with the assistance of the authorities, are carried out under particularly difficult circumstances, said Anna Lundblad, spokesman for the Swedish Ministry of Foreign Affairs.
